Our President and CEO, Kevin Davies, recently had the honour of sitting down with Ontario-based waste industry leaders, Marnie and George Brown, both of MASS Environmental.
As the Brown’s stay in Calgary was brief, the meeting agenda was originally set to focus solely on the no-sorting recycling programs for which Green Start has earned a leading reputation.
Naturally, when you put like-minded strategists in a room together, agendas tend to take on a dynamic quality… and pace. Quickly, the conversation moved from no-sort recycling to the emerging and forward-thinking field of organics recycling.
A little know fact about food waste: it is one of the worst polluters in landfills. Due to the environmental conditions of the landfill, food waste generates 5 to 6 times its weight in CO2, and is also a significant source of methane. Estimated to monopolize approximately 19% of most urban landfills in North America, food waste is an issue we cannot ignore.
Rather, food waste should be seen as an opportunity, waiting to be energized.
Organics recycling takes food waste, and through composting, turns it into a nutrient rich soil much like fertilizer. It is energy efficient, saves landfill space and emissions, and compliments the next cycle of growth.
So, back to the meeting: We were impressed to hear that MASS distributes fantastic equipment that can recycle organics on site at a client’s facility, in a compact, fully automated process. MASS, however, was yet to distribute any equipment in Calgary, and expressed an interest in collaborating with Green Start to fill this niche.
Effective January 30, 2011, Green Start will be doing just that. The no-work, no-stress organics recycling equipment provided by MASS compliments our client-first commitment, building further convenience into sustainable solutions.
Cheers to MASS Environmental for the wonderful opportunity. And cheers to progress, with purpose.
